Dub FX Documentary active listening Writing Exercise 1

This is a YouTube profile done by supporters of Dub FX.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=e7Fv0hB-R8A

We'll watch this actively together.

As you see in your Homework handout, the exercise is to respond to the short documentary by sharing an insight and something specific you noticed in your active viewing.  Read the other Comments as they come here on the blog so we are not repeating the exact same things but rather are adding to the conversation and using many different ideas in the response to the film.

Have fun and we'll notice a lot more as a group than we ever could as any one person!

Mike

Dub FX, stylised also Dub Fx and DubFx, (real name Benjamin Stanford) is a worldwide street performer and studio recording artist from St Kilda, Melbourne, Australia (Wikipedia).
With his girlfriend and performer Flower Fairy.

P.S. Here are links to two other Dub FX videos and note the production values of these YouTube videos.  Plus they are just good songs, IMHO.

  1. I thought it was very cool that they had a sign language person interpreting at one of his concerts.

  2. In his video he said that "if you don't throw yourself out there, nothing will happen". That is so true if you have a dream or something you wish would come true, you have to go out and do it or it won't come true with just sitting around.

  3. If you noticed at the very beginning when he's tossing his shirt slightly into the air they reversed the film for a split second to give the shirt another bounce. This little bit was done at the point Dub FX mentions "moving and bouncing".

    1. In addition another moment of specific editing could be seen as to how the footage of his previous concerts in various countries had black and white film. Using black and white film can be a metaphor for the past-similar to how most old footage and pictures from the past are also limited to black and white.

  5. I enjoyed how he mixed the saxophone and his beatboxing together. It is cool how he came up from street performing to a famous artist doing shows on stage.

  7. Something that I noticed throughout the documentary was that in the clips of him performing the crowd size varied drastically. It would show a clip of him on streets with only a few people watching, and then cut to him performing in a concert hall full of people. I thought this went with his points that you have to take action if you want to achieve your goals.

  8. I liked how the video went from him performing to his interviews. Also, his interview and songs matched up. He talked about how you cant just want something you have to actually get up and do it. In his song he also had the lyrics with the same message about how he never gives up on his dream.

  10. I enjoyed how the performed took us through his life journey. Taking us to the places he traveled and how in the beginning of his career he said practicing in your bedroom doesn't help as much as actually going out and failing in front of people. Using lyrics to understand him , the "character". Helps show he's easy going yet inspirational.

  11. I remember seeing the part he talks about always trying new things with his works and not being afraid of making mistakes and/or failing with what he does because he said "You wont get anywhere if you dont go out and do it"

  12. I enjoyed how the video showed his progression. At the beginning of the video he explained how he just played on the street, then at the end of the video he was on a stage with a huge crowd singing along.

  13. I thought it was great that at the couple of concerts he had, there was lots of lights that seemed to work well with the music.

  14. "Go with the flow" really stuck out to me. The music flows together and people have go with the flow in everyday life, so it has two meanings.

  15. I agree with Kirsten, I thought it was very cool that there was a sign language interpreter at one of the concerts, it showed Dub FX's heart for relating to all people. Throughout the whole video, I kept on thinking about how beautiful the togetherness of the audience was despite the peoples obvious individuality as unique beings. I think Dub FX is a very eclectic and independent genre that has a relational sense that makes it attractive and gives off the vibe of being a part of something.

  16. Everything about this documentary speaks of freedom to me. The shaky camera work to give you a sense of being there in the rawest sense, accompanied with the singers goal to "Not please the crowd, but to do what I think sounds right", exhibits an un-perfected and uncensored culture in which you have a sense of absolute freedom.

  17. I liked how he expressed the importance of freedom of speech in his music and the importance it is to him.

  18. One thing I noticed about this video is that he was just an average person trying to become famous. I give him promps for street performance

  19. DubFX creates an authentic sound, one that resonates with real people, as we can see from the enthusiastic response he receives from performances all around the world.

  20. I like how he says that if you don't put yourself out there and make mistakes you are never going to learn anything from them. Traveling across the world as a street performer could get tiring. I just hope that what he is doing stays fresh for him.

  21. I think it is very cool that he is making music that makes an impact on others people's lives. It is an interesting story because the documentary shows how he became zero to hero within a short amount of time.

  22. I liked how he referred to the different combined sounds as textures. It was interesting the artist was the originator and composer.

  23. I think it's impressive that he creates music for the joy of it and sharing with others, not solely for profit. It's amazing that he can perform live and come up with a cool sound on the spot.

  24. i find it fascinating that he does this simply because he enjoys it, not for a profit or for anyone else's enjoyment. Everyone just happens to like what he does

  25. I think it's amazing that he's not focused on making money from his music, even though he easily could, but that his focus is to make music because it's his passion.

  26. I think it's really impressive that he decided to leave his job he had making money with another crew to leave and follow his own dreams. That is really hard to do especially without the guarantee of any income.
